This is a well made tool that is safe to use when used properly. The claws are steel, not aluminum, and the threaded bolt appears to be hardened steel. I greased the threads and used a socket wrench to alternately compress the springs. You must compress both sides evenly so that the side forces on the bolts don't get too high. It takes time, but it's better to be patient than get hurt. There are also 2 steel nuts at the base of the 2 prong handle, the handle itself is unthreaded. The nuts can be easily removed and checked for wear.
