I lost my last seemingly free silicon so it was an expired purchase. Before silicone, they were difficult to clean and the base of the bristles was almost impossible to clean completely, so silicone prevents bacteria build-up. As a bonus, they work a thousand times better. Although I only needed one, two turned out to be useful in the kitchen. And the other two are now in use in my workshop, so it was very profitable. My smell is zero.
