I couldn't open this by simply sliding the base as instructed. I had the same problem with two of them (one was sent to replace the first). I had to use a thin knife to pry it open with one side just enough to insert a screwdriver to pry it open. (My experience isn't unique, watch YouTube videos on how to open this thing.) And when I opened it up, the batteries on the two ends couldn't touch. Obviously it didn't work. The batteries were so loose that they both fell out when I turned the remote over (with the cover off). The replacement remote was slightly better. Only one battery fell out.
