Review on πŸ“Ά CradlePoint CTR35 Portable Wireless N Router by Mark Howard

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works as advertised, wish it had more features

I've used the CTR35 a few times since I got it in mid-November and so far I'm loving it. I've had a couple of instances where it wouldn't recognize my LG AD600 (AT&T) USB modem for some reason. I had to turn the unit off and let it sit for a while and then turn it back on before it recognized the AD600, but other than that it seems pretty reliable. I was wondering if I was getting the full bandwidth that the AD600 was giving me when connected directly to my laptop because I was seeing VERY poor speeds on my iPad 3 in speed tests, but I was able to surf the web just fine. My laptop actually reported the speed I would normally expect (6MB down, 1MB up), so I guess I'll attribute it to a shaky iPad speed test app. PPTP VPN server. I bought an Asus RT-N66U (full feature router) to be able to use my AD600 as a modem and have a PPTP VPN server, but it never sees my AD600 properly. I bought a CRT35 to forward the correct port to an Asus router to provide this functionality when traveling. I haven't had a chance to test this, but I've tried port forwarding for some other use and it didn't seem to work. I even set a specific IP address as DMZ but I still couldn't get the right connection. Maybe using static IPs, setting up a DMZ and restarting the device would solve my problem. Still, it wasn't as easy to get it working as other "normal" routers. Basically I am satisfied with the device. I travel a lot and it's nice to have more devices than JUST my laptop (I usually carry my Wi-Fi only iPad with me) with fast Wi-Fi wherever I go. Also, where I work, I sometimes don't get a good cell phone signal, but I can on the other side of the room by the window. This solves that problem, allowing me to place the CTR35 where the signal is best and maintain a room-wide data connection over WiFi. If you travel a lot, I think this is a must have if you have USB tethering.

Pros
  • Sleek design
Cons
  • Some little things
