Review on WeaKnees TiVo Roamio Replacement Fan Kit: Enhance Cooling for Base Roamio and Roamio OTA - Includes Tools by James Hess

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Calm. . . . . AFTER ALL!

I think the noise is due to the wear of the fan and the vibration of the Tivo's metal case. As the fan wears out, the vibration increases and the sound becomes LOUD. To make matters worse, the thermal paste between the heatsink and the CPU was old and dried up. This prevented the heatsink from cooling the processor. I think the motherboard increases the fan speed and keeps it at that level while the CPU heats up. The fan ran slowly after I changed the thermal paste. My first attempt at quieting the original fan was to oil it. I drilled a small hole in his face and dripped silicone wash oil into it. It helped for a few months but got louder. Then I bought a cheap fan and it was loud. Eventually I got tired of taking my Tivo apart and threw in the towel. Weaknees was expensive and I didn't need any tools, but it's QUIET! If you need tools, that's another good reason for you to buy this fan kit. You may be able to extend the life of your vibrating fan by adding anti-vibration material between it and the metal frame. Or maybe hot glue on the base or something. FYI, the dimensions of the fan are 35mm x 35mm x 10mm.
