The task is simple: transfer the cassette to a computer to record it as a digital file. On the plus side: Plug-N-Play is as advertised - no problem. Kudos for using/supporting free software for burning and editing files (Audacity - on CD3 - newer versions online). Although USB 2, it can draw enough current that you don't need to use batteries if you don't want to. Funnily enough, the documentation goes out of its way to position this device as a transmission device only, not intended for actually listening to tapes - unless you plug in headphones to hear what's being streamed to the computer. That's where the positives end. . The door is thin and moves easily when closing. The play button is pressed or missing and it seems like you are pressing it to make it work properly. All of this would be forgivable if the device worked well, but it doesn't. There is an electrical hum built into both the analog audio jack and the digital USB output that is so loud it makes trying to record pointless. The noise is fully playable without inserting a cassette - just press the play button while the speaker is blank and the noise will be very clear and loud. Coming from the cassette generation, if the walkman (or any cassette player in the car) had ever had such poor playback quality, cassettes would never have gotten through. You could try cutting out the background noise, but this makes the audio very digital and not pleasant to listen to. As for this review - no suggestions for better solutions as I continue my search.
