Review on πŸŽ₯ Gator Cases 21-inch Creative Pro Bag for Adjustable Shoulder Strap Video Camera Systems (GCPRVCAM21) by Erin Lowe

The size and padding affect its capacity. Case is too bulky and holds almost nothing

Gator cases are known for being made from superior materials that are durable and weather resistant. This case follows these properties. It has thoughtful design elements like a rain bag, plenty of storage pockets, and even an iPad slot that fits my iPad Pro 10.5 with the Apple keyboard attached. But the case is NOT USED. Despite its huge and unwieldy dimensions (which are listed below using my personal measurements), the design limits its capacity. Please read on to understand the reason. 1) I have a Sony F4 70-200mm lens. I can't be put upright in the suitcase. I can force it in, but then the lens will be tight against the top and bottom of the body, meaning any impact in that area could break the lens. If I put the lens on lengthways, it fits, but then I have "dead space" in the body. There isn't enough room to stack lenses on top of each other, which by the way wouldn't be a good idea either. 2) I have a Sony A7R3 with a 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. The camera cannot stand upright in the case, it has to lie flat. When stowed away I have space to place my Sony F45 directly on top of the camera but I don't like stacking my stuff like this as there is no protection. So more wasted space. 3) There are plenty of external pockets inside the bag, but they are so shallow that they can only hold a lens cloth, cable, or a couple of flash drives. For example, I can't put a Sony charger in the zippered storage pockets because they're sewn too finely. 4) To better highlight the bad design I have a photo of this bag next to my ONA Brixon bag. You can see Ona is slightly taller but almost twice as wide. The Ona's height is perfect for holding all the Sony gear I have in the picture. This includes Sony A7R3 with Sony 24-70/2.8 and Peak Design coupling, Sony 70-200/F4, Sony 85mm/1.4, Sony F45 flash, extra battery, charger, camera strap, extra cables and cleaning supplies. - it all fits in a bag half the size. With the crocodile I just take the camera with the lens attached, another lens and put the flash on top of the camera. And the Gator case is very inconvenient to carry because of its size and design. 5) The Gator sleeve is made of polyester, NOT nylon. Nylon is an excellent material, while polyester is prone to tearing. I bought this case thinking it would fit more of my gear as it's bigger than my Ona Brixton. Sometimes when I travel I need a lot more gear and I thought this would be a great bag for airports and more demanding photography - I was wrong. I can't stress enough how much less this Gator bag holds up considering it's twice the size. In addition to the fact that this case is VERY EXPENSIVE, I suggest you don't buy it. Despite my complaints about this bag, here are a few reasons you might need it. 1) The bag has an insane amount of padding. If you see a picture of an empty alligator pouch, you can see that it's almost filled with padding and dividers. This offers good protection by reducing storage space. 2) The bag is weather resistant and comes with a rain cover. If the rain catches you by surprise, you're protected. Of course, this rain cover is in a pocket that takes up about 10% of the internal storage space of the suitcase. Manufacturer-Specific Features - Protected transport and storage for DSLR camera bodies, lenses and other accessories - Split, padded interior offers customizable protection - Fully removable interior allows for easy load changes - Adjustable shoulder strap makes it easy to carry the bag during transport - External storage pockets accommodate accessories and extras - Durable polyester outer with reflective inserts on pockets for better visibility in low light conditions - Lightweight D-ring attachment loops and heavy-duty zips included. The strap on the lid is detachable to keep the bag open during use. Removable rain cover. from the manufacturer) - Inner dimensions soft case: length 11 x width 9 x depth 7.5 inches - External dimensions: 14 long x 12 wide x 10 deep. Based on the different external and internal dimensions, it can be seen that there is a lot of padding. There are 2 long legs at the bottom of the suitcase that run the full length of the suitcase. Floor - helps protect the chamber from wet floors. - The inner lining of the case is open. This is a great place to hide money or just help dry your bag if it gets wet. The soft interior is a self-contained soft shell that can be easily removed from the outer shell. The case has several layers of protection. The outer layer is waterproof material, then there is a zip/removable liner, then there is a soft shell that can also be removed from the outer shell. The inner pocket also has its own carrying handles. I also use the Maxpedition operator case. It is equipped with an alligator lining. This bag is twice the size of the Ona Brixton as the water bottle slots can be used to carry my telephoto lens and flash. The zippered pockets can be expanded to hold a lot of gear. So the Brixton is my everyday camera bag with three lenses and a flash, and the Maxpedition with in-line pocket is my travel bag that fits all my stuff. The Maxpedition is made of ballistic nylon, which is also water-repellent. This is a great suitcase for long trips and is only slightly larger than the Brixton. It is also not noticeable due to its simple design. Manufacturer's Shipping Dimensions - External Length: 14.96 inches - External Width: 12.99 inches - External Height: 10.63 inches - Weight: 9.26 lbs. Bottom Line: If you want a case with extreme padding and you only have 2 lenses and a flash, and you also want to carry your laptop in the bag, and you want a rain cover, and you value a bulky bag, then you will get the Gator Case love. In fact, it has the strongest padding I've ever seen in a suitcase (+2 stars). But if you need a third lens, or want a much less bulky (and easier to carry) body, then look further.
