I use it to store a set of 11 Pilot G-2-07 pens along with a fine Sharpie tip and still have room to fold a few more. In addition, there is about 2.5 inches of clearance at the end for additional small parts. The leather is quite soft, but thick and durable. It has a solid brown zipper with an extra piece of leather to make it easier to open and close. Keep an open mind about plugging and unplugging handles while I work, which I like. It looks and smells like leather because it is leather. The pouch will likely develop, change color and darken over time, but that is to be expected with this skin type. I have no complaints about this product but I do have a suggestion to add a leather loop to one of the ends so I can clip the backpack to the outside with a carabiner for easier access.
