Okay, there are a lot of reviews on this thing. Here's my attempt to dispel the confusion. This is a 10 inch cartridge filter with a gasket on one end and an inlet on the other. Unlike traditional pleated filters, water does not enter the housing and then through and then out again. Instead, it flows from the unsealed end to the sealed end and then out. This gives the water more time to filter as it flows the full length of the cartridge. So far, so good. And now the most interesting. The rubber gasket should be installed with the rubber gasket facing the inlet/outlet side of the filter holder to allow filtered water to escape, NOT the end of the flare body. Here's an IMPORTANT caveat I found: You might want to flip the filter assembly if it's a typical whole house filter! Apparently the black end was facing down in the original application. And apparently it matters. The charcoal and white parts of this filter are just loose powder. It is installed black side up, as water enters the contents rise and when it comes out it sinks again. Basically, you're rifling the entire filter every time you turn the water flow on and off. This effect is amplified by pressure. We got a cloud of white every time we turned on the faucet, and the filter gradually mixed the black and white parts together. Solution: Turn the entire filter housing over so the black part is facing down and the end of the housing with the connectors. .When installed by gravity on the side, such as with the black housing down, flare-ups, water pressure simply pushes the filter media into place. Soon the filter settles and does its job. Hope this will be helpful!
