This is a good little spirit level, the price of which (I paid $50) makes it a very good deal. I bought it to level the floor in our garage and using it saved me from some costly mistakes as it revealed different problems than I had suspected with the naked eye. That alone made it worth the price and more and I haven't even used it on a number of other projects we have. Indoors, the laser is strong enough and the line is visible. After shopping, I found that similar lasers were much more expensive. It really got me when I took it outside in the morning to try it on a slope we are also working on. I wasn't expecting much as it's not the most powerful laser and I've hired professional rotating lasers which are designed for outdoor use and don't work very well even during the day. Well, this little beauty did it. In low to medium light conditions, the line on the story post was visible. It has limits, it's good, probably up to 50ft +/- 10ft. It's not much, but it works for us and it doesn't cost more than $700. Strategic tripod placement provides pretty good coverage. The main limitation is its field of view. The laser has an arc of about 120 degrees along which the laser casts its line. The emitter is embedded quite strongly in the body, so it cannot be thrown back and forth. Depending on what you are working on, you may need to reposition the device. Overall, the device is a winner. Update: Another thing I noticed is that under average outdoor lighting, when the red laser is weak on the white side of the pole, if you rotate the pole 180 degrees so the silver gray side faces the laser, it is much more visible. I can even use it outside on a cloudy day and see the line on the back of the pole.
