I used these spark plug testers at school. they are EXCELLENT! You can set how big you want your spark to be, which will help you easily determine if your coil packs or distributors are getting enough voltage or if your spark plug is bad. In a nutshell how to use this tool: You pull off the spark plug coil/ignition wire (depending on the type of ignition system of course) and stick it into the end of the tester that looks like the top of the spark plug. The alligator clip part simply attaches to any metal part of the car to provide a ground connection. Once connected, start the car. If you can get the arc through the points in the tester, especially when it's fully adjusted, you know your coils/distributor are getting enough voltage, so that's good, and most likely it's your spark plugs. . If you are barely getting a spark, especially if the tips are almost touching, then for some reason you are not getting enough voltage, which indicates a bad distributor/coil assemblies or bad wiring somewhere between the coil packs/spark plug wires and the positive. battery clamp. This tool is a great little diagnostic tool and I recommend every mechanic to have one! This is a great tool for fixing misfire and other ignition problems!
