Really 3.5 stars, maybe 4 but just received. You should definitely disassemble it completely (easy, just a few small bolts and set screws) and clean it. Supplied complete except handles. My vise arrived with greasy dirt, particles of different sizes, metal shavings and so on. A little warm/hot water and detergent later (yes, detergent is great for grease/oil. Cleans your greasy clothes, huh?) and dried, I was able to work with finished surfaces filled with wonderful tool clatter, rough milling and more! Sandpaper, some small stones (actually a cheap whetstone that does a good job of removing raised spots), some light oil, a little sweat (lapping paste would have been nice but there wasn't any) and a few hours. and voila, nice smooth surfaces (well, smoother at least). Reassembled the Johnny 5, adjusted the rails and grips properly, added enough grease/oil and the vise now runs smoothly with very little play. After about 20 minutes of gameplay, everything became even smoother (reconfiguration of the guides was necessary). I wish there was a better way to attach the vise screw to the moving vise jaw (simple set screw and nut), but it works, and the guide rod reduces the angle of the vise when tightening is awkward. For the moment I am satisfied with this vise and I believe that it will pleasantly surprise me. I will be using it on a Craftsman 10" 1/2 HP bench drill. The vise fits the holes on the adjustable table (5" center) but not the holes on the base (they are 3 3/4" Center). The raw surface texture reminds me of some kind of flame spray. (?) home page. Either way it seems quite rough and pleasing to the eye. It's a manly vice of men (including but not limited to women, manly Boys, females and some other primates (hairless or not). Recommended but use at your own risk.
