I like this little pen, but I'm a little hesitant to put something delicate in it. I use it for markers, felt tip pens, and a few small tools so none of those things have to be pretty, but I'm hesitant to use it with my metal lead pencils and fountain pens because of the rather rough burlap/hemp liner. in the pocket area where the pens in the case rub. I think this liner helps with tension to keep the handles from slipping off the roll, but it also creates some roughness for a delicate finish. Quality roll for storing pens, markers etc, this is for you. If you want to keep full-length pencils, look elsewhere. This one is only big enough for handles. It has no valve to prevent the handles from falling out. I only use mine at home, but I still tighten the strap a bit each time I close it to keep the handles from falling out. It's okay once you get used to it.
