Will not withstand surges, potential fire hazard

Not only did this surge protector fail to withstand surges/surges, it was shorted out, smelled like burning insulation and threw out sparks. To me that looks like poor design and a potential fire hazard. We just survived a power outage. The lights went on and off several times, then the power went out for an hour. When power was restored, a switch remained open and could not be reset, apparently due to a short circuit. After disabling everything one by one, I decided that surge protector was to blame. I turned it off, unplugged the attached devices, reset the switch, turned it on and started plugging the devices back in (off of course) one at a time. That's when I noticed the smell of burnt insulation and when I tried to pull the plugs back there was a big bang and sparks flew from the center socket right in my face. The rear threaded mount is black from soot. My guess is that one of the pulse components has failed and shorted out. I'm glad it didn't ignite anything flammable when I wasn't looking. Next time I'll be smart enough to understand right away that the short circuit has to be in the surge protector and not in the devices connected to it, otherwise the switch on the surge protector would trip. In any event, if your circuit breaker tripped after a power surge involving any of these things, DO NOT PULL IT BACK IN after you reset the circuit breaker. Better yet, buy a better surge protector.

Pros
  • 6 outlet surge protector ideal for small office equipment and electronics
Cons
