Review on πŸ“Ή Enhanced Recording Experience: RCA DRC8060N DVD Recorder with Commercial Advance by Charles Alvey

Revainrating 2 out of 5

RCA has issues, as does HDMI upscaling.

I bought this unit today hoping to give my DVDs a new twist with HDMI HD upscaling. I put in a Star Wars DVD purchased from Target to test but found it didn't work! I received an error message stating that a DVD that worked fine on my other DVD player cannot be played in that region (ie DVD region). I was surprised and frustrated by this problem. Reading other reviews of RCA DVD recorders I think it's a waste. RCA doesn't appear to have a strong DVD player/recorder product line. In addition, this device only records to DVD+R and DVD+RW formats and does not use 2.4x spaces which the manual says causes problems. I've seen it on other DVDs that have worked on this machine - really adds to the enjoyment of watching. Here's why: 1) First, check the specifications of your HDTV. I have Sony KV-36HS500. It has DRC function which is a kind of built-in scaling technology. The resulting "improvement" in image quality was noticeable (see next point), but not the "wow" I was hoping for. 2) Second, most movies (ie this technology. The reason I say this is because on the DVDs I've seen so far, the HD quality takes the focus away from the movie. I have a scene from the Seen beginning of Out of Africa where in HD quality the actors were not as obvious in front of studio backgrounds without HD quality I see this as a distraction rather than an increase in viewing pleasure I assume this sort of issue will be a problem for many if not 3 ) HD quality also reduces the screen size by a few inches, or a few more inches in the case of widescreen letterbox DVDs. That means two-thirds of my 36-inch 4:3 TV was unused when I watched The Lord of the Rings. 4) If you have old restored movies from 30's/40's/50's on DVD, I don't think watching them in HD will add to the enjoyment. were not designed for this technology, nor were most commercial DVDs on the market today. This RCA DVD burner, like most other RCA DVD devices I've read about, has enough flaws to look elsewhere. Also keep in mind that most movies and DVDs aren't made for HD quality.
