Review on 🎮 Nintendo DSi Standard Edition - White by Ryan Sandell

I used to be a very avid gamer but with the release of PS2 I liked them less and less. For that I got maybe five games and liked them, but then I found my interest was seriously waning, especially with the new emphasis on what I consider "Xbox games" (ie, shooting games and driving). So I really haven't played much video game related since maybe after 2003. However, I've recently gotten back into Pokemon and a few other game series that I knew were released on the DS. After playing with a friend's DS Lite and another friend's original DS, I decided to to buy a DSi. I'm very glad I did because I don't think I would ever get beyond my 2003 mindset if I didn't. a library of original unmastered DS games that really interest me. This is in contrast to the PSP, which appears to be technically superior in several respects but has an incredibly mediocre selection of games. The screen is larger than the DS and DS Lite, which is good overall (but see one downside below). While I don't use it personally, it's nice to know that I have the entire library of downloadable content available through the DSi store. It also has a browser that's pretty good in a bunch. - Sound quality seems good, although I think I liked that the DS Lite could be a bit better(?). - I like the LED indicators on the DSi more than the DS or DS Lite. You not only look beautiful but are also more informative. When playing wirelessly, the battery indicator is no longer replaced with a WiFi activity indicator. Battery life is good, although I've heard it's a bit worse than the DS Lite. The non-exclusive DSi games (which almost all are) are region free, so it's very easy to play imports from any region. - Again the games library is great and if I had to pick one main feature of the DSi it would be this. CONS - The DSi does not have slot 2 which means you will NOT be able to play Game Boy Advance games on it. I personally don't have a problem with this as I didn't like that many GBA games, but it can be a hindrance for some. It's not as ergonomic as the PSP. In fact it's just a box, it has no handles, no bends or anything else. The key layout is also a bit strange. I don't have big hands but even I feel a bit cramped when using it. It looks like it would be better if the buttons were where the speaker grilles are. If you have big hands, you can buy XL. I hate the included pen. I've always hated all DS styluses. They are too short and narrow and the small top keeps cutting my hand when I use it. Instead, I bought my own third-party PDA styluses. While screen quality is excellent and 99% of games look great on larger displays, there are a few minor issues. You can expect occasional roughness or slight blurring. a special thing The thing that struck me is that when playing Pokemon on the original DS, it's very clear when there's only 1 HP left on the health bar; However, on the DSi, the small red HP bar becomes almost invisible due to upscaling. It's a bit annoying. Although the layout and responsiveness of the DSi's menu system is better than the DS and DS Lite, aesthetically it looks really terrible. The text is incredibly jagged and ugly, and everything looks very blurry and poorly rendered. I can't believe Nintendo even released it like this, it just looks awful. Although DSi supports WPA, for some reason they have chosen to let each and every game implement its own wireless security protocol. Essentially, this means that WPA support, despite being advertised as a DSi feature, IS COMPLETELY USELESS. You CANNOT use WPA with 90% of the games released for the DSi, including newer games like Pokémon HG/SS. WEP was deprecated before the DS was even released, so I find that a bit ridiculous. - Nintendo removed the auto download feature (when the console automatically downloads any game that is in the slot when you turn it on). This is a regression from previous DS systems, ostensibly to prevent piracy or the like. - You still can't turn off the annoying health and safety warnings. - The cameras are totally useless, the photos they take are of even worse quality than from a cheap cell phone. I've only seen one use case of the camera that I thought was worthwhile (Japanese DSiWare game using it for head tracking) but other than that I think they're useless and the system is unnecessarily overpriced. An improvement over the original DS, I still don't like the volume control. Not enough control, I constantly feel like it's either too loud or too quiet. I list more cons here because I think the cons are more beneficial for people but overall I would really recommend it, it's been an amazing investment for me although it does have a few issues. Also to anyone worried that buying a DSi would be a bad idea now that the XL - and eventually the 3DS - no I'm not saying. The DSi is still very good, and there are actually several reasons why you might choose it over the XL (the main reason being size; the XL is almost twice the size of the DSi, making it less portable). I'm listing more cons here because I assume the negatives are more beneficial to people, but overall I would really recommend this, it's been an amazing investment for me despite the few issues it has.
