Does what you expect at a good price

I'm removing the asterisk here because the plastic battery cover on the bottom of each battery is molded to serve as a tiny retaining clip that holds the lithium coin cell battery is secured inside . This part contains a tiny "reverse" that is VERY WEAK in design and if only used a few times over time when changing batteries it can be expected to fail much sooner than it should. This is the weakest point in an otherwise remarkably good design. But failure of just that part renders the rest useless (otherwise you'll have to use tape to attach it there once it breaks). obviously flimsy, and it's the only place (other than the power button) that people regularly bend it in normal use. (Note: Some of these in my box of 24 are better than others here, so there are also manufacturing differences in how these pieces are made.) The rest of the design is quite remarkable. The circuit is a lithium CR2032 and an LED. That's all. You use the legs of the LED to make contact with the battery and switch. When moving the external switch, you merely move one of the LED's legs (which goes through a tiny hole in the switch housing, so it should move when the switch is moved) so that it makes contact with the edge of the battery. Also, they took the time to design it so that the LED legs are the same length (making it very easy to trim during production and reducing the possibility of errors). The top of the candle is just another piece of plastic that doesn't make firm contact with the LED, so anyone can freely flip it around without damaging anything inside. Overall, it's a well thought out, smart design that offers reasonable protection from children playing with it and twisting parts, while being very cheap to manufacture and the only place where human hands need to be directly involved in assembly. The design is made to minimize the chances of this assembly going wrong as well. However, I have 23 that worked out of the box and one that didn't work. The ONLY issue was someone flipped the LED during assembly. This is easy to do as the lengths of the pins are the same. Each leg needs to be bent differently before assembly, and this particular LED was bent "the other way" and mounted backwards. So it didn't work. All I had to do was take it off, bend the wires the other way, put it back in and it worked.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Very expensive
