So far so good with external hard drives

After buying a new Mac and realizing that Apple's proprietary technology was once again outdated (I had to buy an adapter to transfer data from my old Firewire drive), I decided to go with the new USB 3 technology With USB, my old devices work great with the new technology and the LaCie USB 3.0 drive backs up my iMac quickly and efficiently at a very affordable price compared to Thunderbolt drives. I got into PCs in the early days with the Apple IIc, and I can't even begin to imagine how much money I've spent over the years on backup drives and technology that were "permanent and archival" just for the sake of it to get her. disappear in a few years. At the very least, USB is better for backwards compatibility, which helps protect your investment a little longer. The drive is surprisingly compact, so small that it can sometimes get lost on my cluttered desk. Although I use my computer daily, I don't add enough new stuff to the HD drive to force Apple Time Machine to back up all the time, so I just leave the drive offline and when Time Machine is worried that I it's not backup after 10 days, i plug it in and make a backup; it only takes a minute or so. This drive is affordable enough that I'm considering using the second one as an extra backup for family research, genealogy, and photography. I've been using LaCie discs for a number of years now and have had good luck with them. So far the only HD bug I've had with the one that came with my old iMac, knock on wood.

Pros
  • Absolutely amazing!
