Review on Laptop Accessories for πŸ’» Charging and Monitoring with Docking Stations by Guillo Tilden

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works and is profitable (Thinkpad E595 AMD Ryzen version)

I stumbled across this conclusion that Lenovo didn't sell a dock for my Thinkpad with what I needed (two HDMI outs via USB C in alternate mode) and thought it might be worth a try for the price. Works great, no configuration needed. I ran it through a dual HDMI KVM and one of the monitors has a DVI input (so a conversion cable is needed) - most DisplayPort to dual HDMI over MST have reported problems with this type of configuration but don't with this dock. Use it on Ubuntu. Be sure to edit /etc/modules and add 'typec_displayport' to the list and then modprobe typec_displayport before enabling it. I initially had trouble displaying it on monitors (it's a software issue and nothing to do with the adapter). Pros: Powered by a laptop charger that also charges the laptop (many docking stations require a separate power supply) and gaming (aside from your operating system recognizing the USB-C Alternate Mode functionality) - Compatible with 1080P HDMI monitors ( I assume the 4K functionality works but haven't had a chance to test it) - Much more efficient and faster than a DisplayLink dock (for those with a USB-C port) - Very good value for money Relationship. Cons: - The only thing I can think of is that it has audio out but no audio in (or maybe it supports both with a suitable splitter? If so, it's not documented anywhere) - (update) Mine was just given to me by my employer given the Dell laptop of the time due to the excessive power requirement (130 watts). It still mostly works, but there is no video output (although the laptop recognized the presence of monitors). Please make sure your laptop power consumption is less than 85W before purchasing. I'm just glad it works with my Thinkpad. Dell needs to make better laptops ;-) Definitely recommended.
