Good choice for playing anything recorder vs price

I was looking for a DVD recorder to replace my lightning struck Magnavox. My old voice recorder is a year old and I've learned a few things this year: 1. If you look at the reviews; it seems that all units, all manufacturers have their own problems.2. The main problem is that the consumer buys and writes negative reviews. These devices are not as easy to operate as a VCR. This is new technology and requires you to read the manual or at least the quick start guide.3. Basically, DVD recorders are single-task computers. So things happen. The computer world is not perfect. Out of 100 discs burned, I had a problem with 1 and it could be the media or myself.4. There seem to be only a few companies that make DVD recorders and they label them differently. The file menu and selection for this device is very similar to the Magnavox. This unit also finalizes my old discs for playback on any DVD player. With that in mind, let's talk about the Toshiba D-R550. It works as advertised, burns DVDs and also plays multiple formats including Divx. The menus are easy to understand and the timer recording is what you would expect until you hit the quality setting. Should I record with the highest settings? I don't know, drives are cheap and I encourage you to try all but the worst settings. For me, the 6 hour option works well for cable TV recordings. It's not an HD recorder, after all, if only it were the only true HD recorder that could record wirelessly. Cable HD is not true HD. Recording movies in HD is not possible, hence my question: why record at maximum settings? Oh yes, discs are cheap and organization could be easier. Overall I'm very happy with this recorder, especially considering the price. Don't forget to finalize your disc if you want to watch it on a regular DVD player.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Too long to wait
