I bought this 3 hole punch in 2014 after getting tired of playing around with our old squeaky punch that could barely punch a hole. I didn't just want an old 3 hole punch. I wanted something solid metal that would last another three decades, like my last hammer drill, which I'm sure my dad used in college. I chose this 3 year old Officemate and boy am I glad I did. First off, I'm a homeschooler, so my paper die cutting needs are HUGE. Everything my son does goes into his portfolio. Also on sick days I punch a letter or doctor's visit report and attach it, to document his sick days. I mean our family just can't get along with a crappy 3 hole punch. This was AWESOME and after 3 years it still looks and works like new. It is HEAVY DUTY solid metal throughout except for the punch handle scale which is very strong, thick plastic. The round logo on the thick metal handle is rubberized. There is nothing flimsy or cheap about this hole punch. *COOLEST FEATURE* The hole punch has a solid metal "paper stopper" on one end that you can lift up for a nice edge to align all your papers so you punch each stack has holes in the same place . That's great. However, the metal paper stopper is on a rotating rivet, So you can fold it over and punch holes in a whole sheet of paper of any size. This comes in handy if you want to make a really creative openwork binding for a school arts project, but you need to punch six, nine, or twelve holes, not just three. (Again, you can see how handy this is for home school projects.) To empty the tray: The black and navy bold edge on the hole punch is actually a tray drawer that you can use to empty any paper circles. He is holding a TON. Like a year's supply of strokes. When you're ready to empty it, turn it over and open the compartment door. It's really simple and I love the design. The tray will NEVER detach or open by itself or accidentally. NEVER. Really difficult to open when the stamp is in the vertical position. Turning it upside down makes the tray slide out easier and looks natural. I thought it was a good design feature. Despite all the beatings I take, I still only drain it once a year. The blades are still sharp and quickly cut through stacks of boxes. (Depending on the weight of the media used, it can handle 5 to 8 sheets of cards at a time.) Speaking of office supplies, I also like this durable, all-metal stapler. Again, I've had it for several years now and it has never failed or let me down. If I could go back to college, I would love to invest in these tools and have them for life instead of messing around with things that don't work.
