This review is premature as it just arrived and we only used it for 1 turkey and 1 pie. So how it works and holds up for a while remains to be seen. Ours arrived just in time for Thanksgiving and were greeted with a turkey waiting. The external probe was used first. It worked great in the oven (not for the microwave) and with the base unit on the counter next to the oven or grill. We could watch the inner heat of the dinner as it was cooked to perfection. Accuracy is so good that you can see the oven elements turning on and off inside the meat to within tenths of a degree. no sound could be heard. We will review the ALARM sound again later. There was a lot of light in the room but the backlight worked very well and would help if needed. Disable the external sensor to use the direct sensor. A direct probe was also used to check the required temperature of a Dutch apple pie. He worked great. The thermometer will turn off automatically when the built-in sensor is closed or has been inactive for 10 minutes. We haven't used the "Hold" or "F/C" temperature functions, but they have been tested and work well. The battery is rechargeable and comes with a cable to connect to a small external 5V USB power source (not included) such as a cell phone charger.
