Review on πŸ“» Optimized Falcon 2 Meter Dipole Ham Radio Antenna for Amateur Radio Enthusiasts by Lance Alvarez

Not tuned to 2m HAM

This antenna is fine until you try to transmit on 2m HAM (144-148MHz). At 2 meters the SWR goes off scale. approx. 8:1 at 146,000 MHz (mid-band). I measured the elements and each was 17 inches long. The formula to calculate the length of a 1/2 wave dipole element using two elements is a frequency of 468/MHz and dividing by two gives the length of each element in feet independently and multiplied by 12 gives inches. Using this formula, I reverse engineered to find the 165MHz center frequency for this antenna (468/165 = 2.836/2X12 = 17.016 inches each). The element should be about 19.2 inches long, making buying this antenna more of a project than a decision. Most antennas are too long for us to shorten, but this antenna is obviously intended for higher non-amateur frequencies. The solution to this is to replace the items on it with two items that are each 19.2 inches long and when you put them together it looks and works really well, but you could do it yourself. If you need a project, buy this antenna. Douglas E. TrappKC6ZOFIrving, Texas
