I ordered this as a new towel for my son. He started outgrowing the towels he was given as a newborn. This one said it was 31x31 (I think). It turned out to be exactly the same size as all the towels he already had. Not only that, but it's a bit rougher than I expected. It's definitely still usable, but not as soft as my son's other towels. I've never used it, I ended up giving it to a friend as part of a baby shower gift, but I think it will be very absorbent. Just not the softest towel. Not so rude as to hurt your child (I don't think so anyway), might just feel a little uncomfortable drying off if they even notice. For a child, as far as I know, it can be ok. In my opinion it could have been made of a softer material. I wanted to return it but time passed and I decided I would just add it as a birthday gift from friends.
