If you like emulators and retro games, they will help you get started right away. They send signals like xbox controllers which are automatically recognized by windows machines without drivers or programming, linux box worked first time too (we don't make fruit so can't vouch for it). I will point out that the battery covers on the back sometimes come loose if the controller is placed too hard or shaken, making them not entirely safe for small children. Battery life isn't bad at all, we get plenty of hours of gameplay between replacements. We had two a little over a year, gave one to a friend and bought a replacement.
