Review on Canon ELPH 330 Stabilized Pink by Steve Whited

Great photos in Auto mode but overall lack of functionality

I think Auto mode is one of the best I've used - it produces consistently good shots in all conditions and a lot better in many instances than defaults. The function button that allows you to take photos and the camera records a short video before the photo is taken is just stupid. Operating the controls requires care - even for those with small fingers. There aren't enough scene choices, for example, there's no "landscape" mode. And to get to the different scenes you have to switch to program mode and the different scenes are mixed with lots of creative effect options like "sepia" which isn't a typical scene choice. Program mode should be accessible via a separate control button, and Canon's decision not to go that route is just plain stupid. However, the picture quality is excellent. The zoom can actually go up to 40x and even with digital zoom the images are sharp. We photographed a coyote about 30 meters away in low evening light and were amazed at how clear and well exposed the shot was. You have a Canon SD1400 and it takes sharper photos. It's just not as versatile as I'd hoped, largely due to the way Canon has integrated Program, Scene, and Creative Effects modes. It's not very functional if you plan on using these things a lot. However, as mentioned earlier, the auto mode on this camera is really excellent.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
