I ended up buying an Epson Workforce ES-500W as a refurbished unit from Revain. Firstly I am very happy with the refurbished unit, it looks and works like new - a lot. Second, the ES-500W supports both of Epson's scanner software packages: Epson Scan Smart and Document Capture Pro. Scan Smart is the software most commonly used for day-to-day tasks, but it falls short when it comes to automated scanning tasks, and that's where Document Capture Pro comes in. This software allows you to automate batch scanning. For example, I have a job setup where I load multiple documents into a separator sheet feeder, press the scan button, and each document is scanned and saved as a separate searchable PDF file on my QNAP network server. It's fast, reliable and I don't have to think much about it. My ultimate goal for this entire process is to get rid of most of my paper and if the process becomes painful I will not. With this scanner, combined with good software, that's no problem. So if like me you want to get rid of the clutter in your life and get rid of all the paper, this Epson scanner will help you and is a good choice - highly recommended.
