When I first received this item and pulled it out of the package, I was met with a rattling sound. This did not bode well. Sure enough, although it works when I plug it in, whatever piece is rattling around inside seems to be preventing it from holding a charge. The charging cable is very short, and unless it's plugged into a portable battery, it's really not usable. Although this might have been a shipping issue, the fact is that solid construction would have held up regardless of normal shipping movements.On top of this, there is no volume control. The voice isn't super loud, but as with all kid toys that make noise, it would likely get annoying after a short time.Functionally, this toy has potential. There are both single-digit and double-digit addition and subtraction digital flash cards, though they're all mixed together, so it's not the best for targeted skills practice. For a general review, or keeping existing skills sharp over break, it would be useful. There is also a button for multiplication and division facts.The toy has some games as well as the flash cards. In one game, three numbers flash on the screen for two seconds, then the user has 13 seconds to replicate the numbers in the correct order. In another game, users have to pick the largest or smallest of three numbers. The game picks whether the user is looking for largest or smallest, and it alternates.If the battery worked, and if the game had volume control, it would be an amazing gift and toy for any child, though ages 5 and up would probably have the most success. Unfortunately, as it is, it's not useful for anything except a paperweight.
