Review on Enhanced Buffalo AirStation N600 Gigabit Dual Band HighPower Open Source DD-WRT Wireless Router (WZR-600DHP) by Rob Bradford

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Buffalo Hello performance?. Maybe: Buffalo Hi Power?. Not quite, if only.

Bought this router to replace the Linsys E2500 I had. At first I was looking for high performance as there are multiple Wi-Fi networks in the area and all channels seem to be busy all the time. Turning the router on with full power in the wireless network settings did not result in a stronger signal than a two-wire router with a built-in antenna. 2Wire only has a 2.4GHz band so I compared them. Buffalo was actually worse and had less coverage than 2-wire with a maximum power of 400mW. According to DD-WRT, a Buffalo setting of 30dBm results in an output power of over 740mW. It just seems wrong and inaccurate for some reason. I'm not sure if it's a hardware limitation or something else. But since I was completely disappointed with the WiFi range I was getting, I installed external Hi Gain 7db antennas to replace the funny bunny ears on the Buffalo. That helped. The performance and coverage is great now. It's stronger than a 2-wire signal and I really like the router for streaming videos and music around the house. The router runs very smoothly with all connected media devices and hasn't had any data dropouts or freezes for weeks.
