It's hard plastic so water doesn't get in which is great as it means no mold. The colors are bright. Our daughter loves them and plays with them every bath. She has her favorites and sometimes even kicks Mr. Lion out of the bathtub when he gets naughty. Some reviewers found fault with the smell - I only noticed a slight plastic odor upon opening the box, which makes sense given they are plastic and have been in the box for a long time. A quick hand wash with warm water and dish soap solved the problem. Other reviewers complained about ink fading - we didn't see that. The same reviewers also talked about washing them in the dishwasher - maybe not dishwasher safe? Given that the dishwasher removes the coating from my pans, I'm not surprised that dishwashing can cause the color to peel or fade. I don't see them as "dishwasher safe" anywhere. So basically, if you use them normally, you know they're great as bath toys for kids, not like some dishwasher color tester.
