Excellent picture, reasonable price

I bought this with my HD LCD TV (1080p model). Do you have any other DVD player (also SONY) that is a carousel model and honestly looks a lot better than a single disc player. It loads faster, doesn't have to hunt for the right slot for a hard drive, and is generally much easier to use. Buy a carousel model if you play CDs as background music, but why bother with DVDs. I think I can get up every hour and a half to put a new movie on my DVD player. I haven't had any problems with the SONY carousel, but since it's more mechanical I suspect it won't be as reliable as this new one. This player plays everything, even my lower resolution copies, and it looks great on an HDTV. There are no artifacts, drops, freezes and other problems with this player. The same cannot be said for the SONY carousel mentioned above, which has problems with some DVDs. The price of this player is quite reasonable and from my experience it is a SONY brand which I have found to be very reliable. Dolby sound is not connected yet, but soon. Expect this to work well. If you need a DVD player, I recommend you consider this one. You can buy it without upconverting function, but the price difference is small and you will use this device for a long time. I think it improves the picture quality but honestly it's very hard to say. Buy the Blue Ray models if you have the cash (and have a 1080P TV), but if you're looking for good performance and value you'll have a hard time beating this machine. As for me, I'll wait until Blue Ray models drop in price and more movies and cable channels support this option.

Pros
  • Dolby Digital and DTS decoding; digital coaxial and optical audio outputs
Cons
  • so far so good
