I have 4 RAM slots on my motherboard with 2 x 4GB memory chips installed in 2012. I upgraded to 2x8GB chips from TEAM Group and they work great in combination with the old chips. I made sure to put different RAMs on separate channels so they are arranged like 8-4-8-4. There is no problem using different sizes and brands as long as they have the same speed and tension. I saved a lot of money compared to buying another brand. Now my only problem is Photoshop has gone insane eating RAM and eating it all and chewing a little to eat more. It's like a Cookie Monster on steroids, this Photoshop. Never satisfied. I feel like I could have 128GB and Photoshop would still complain about it not having enough RAM. :(
