A little confusing for this aspiring drone pilot

Full Disclosure: This is my first real drone experience. The instructions that came with the drone suggest that if you are a beginner, you will likely need an experienced drone pilot to learn it. I think I partially agree: my first few flights would probably have been better with an experienced buddy. However, I went through all the instructions (provisioning, app installation, powering on, three different calibrations, Wi-Fi setup) and my first flight. Basically, I wanted to get it airborne and back on the ground safe and sound. In that respect I was successful. Luckily, the drone is set up to operate in beginner mode, which limits the number of mistakes I can make. And it includes a "Return Home" button that gently brings it back to me. Mainly to me. I stupidly put a little platform on my lawn, thinking it would return to that platform. But he landed a few feet from the platform and landed on the grass the first time, causing him to land askew and two of the blades to stop in the grass. It was a little stressful, but I found I could guide him a bit when he came home so he ended up where I wanted him. Also, I probably should have steered it from the sidewalk or driveway to give it a little more wiggle room where it landed. The setup needs to be a bit more robust and clearer. There are beeps and lights to show you how alignment is progressing, but on a sunny day these lights are difficult to interpret. And the readings on the remote are hard to see, especially in bright light. A calibration process is required every time the drone is powered on. This calibration isn't difficult or time consuming, except that it involves multiple steps and I'm not always sure where I am in the calibration process. So I tried restarting everything a couple of times, turning off the remote control and drone and starting over. But every time I do that, the remote control and the drone connect to each other with a delay of about 40 seconds. Sometimes a message appeared that the connection was not working, but then the message disappeared. This scares me a little, because what if the connection is lost while the drone is flying? Hopefully it comes back to me automatically (as it should). But still, as a beginner, I'm nervous. I understand that I still have a lot to learn. I need to do a few short training flights, read a bit to learn more about the features and then practice some more. I think learning to fly a drone takes practice no matter what drone you use, but this one from Bwine could be better with more detailed instructions and an easier to follow calibration process. I definitely do NOT recommend this for children. . As an adult, I think I would benefit from some observation. But this is especially true for children. Finally, I have to add that this drone looks and feels solid. And the app is way better than I expected. I think since it is not one of the "big names" in the drone field, the price is more reasonable than other companies. But that could also be why the manual, app, and setup feel a little less polished than other drones.

Pros
  • Great for me
Cons
  • No instructions
