There is no tongue to allow the child's foot to bend to get into the shoe. The hole isn't much wider than his toe. Basically, the child should appear almost like a ballerina on pointe shoes, then slip into the shoe and awkwardly stretch the leg. It is impossible for a child aged 4 to carry it alone. I've never seen anything like it: the sole is open, it looks like a suspension bridge. I could see that even if we could wear shoes (which we never did) that the open-structure sole would likely break when a child jumped off the jungle gym for the first time. Or, even worse, collecting dirt, sand, and dirt while playing.
