I have medium length, medium thick hair that is difficult to curl. Every hair is different but after trying a few strategies with these coils this works for me. At night after showering when my hair is damp I apply about 2 teaspoons of American Crew Extra Hold Gel, this is for men (Redken Extra Hold Mousse didn't cut). Then I blow dry between damp and slightly damp. I have annoyingly inconsistent results with slightly wet and dry hair. Then I insert the coils down the middle of the hair shaft to leave room at the top and about 2-3 inches at the ends. When the coil falls out, I add hair. The trick is to make it snug enough that it doesn't fall out but still tight, for me it's just over an inch hair's breadth. You want to tug on it after you put it in to make sure it's secure. And I'm going to sleep. Since they aren't too close to my head, I can move them so my head touches the pillow. Is this the most comfortable sleep? no But most nights I have a hard time falling asleep and I still can. Lately I've been regularly waking up around 5am and taking them out, and this is VERY important or the curls won't hold: I spray my whole head with hairspray. Then I quickly check if all the strands are twisted around the face. If there are missing or weird sections, I steam, then put a few coils back in and fall back asleep easily. When I wake up I have wavy hair that literally lasts all week! And I wear my hair to work almost every day, if not every day. On the fourth or fifth day, when the waves need a little lift, I spritz on Deva Curl and voila! Not as wavy as day one or two but my hair still looks classy and cute. I think the whole process can be done without sleeping on weekends. It's best for me to sit or sleep while my hair does itself! Styling is also easy with a hair divider. Oh and I ended up buying two sets, well worth it. Not all my hair fits in one set.
