I didn't really get the difference between "FB-44" and "FB-44II" until I got my head around have. The external control sticks and base have been redesigned for a smoother and more refined look than the original version. Aesthetically I like the new version. I like the old model better in use. In the "Mark II" version, there is too much damping grease inside, and the rotating base is difficult to rotate. I also found the smoother and less angular base to be harder to tighten and especially loosen to remove the head from the tripod. Functionally, the FB-44II does a good job (as does the FB-44) even with heavy eccentric loads. But I find that excessive use of damping grease detracts from the ease of adjustment and enjoyment of using what may be quality gear.
