Don't waste time in vain
As others have said, it's almost impossible to remove plastic without damaging the surface with a knife. As soon as it was removed from the packaging, it immediately fell apart (2 end caps, middle plastic part, end part with a groove). If you reassemble it and try to install it, twisting/stretching etc can't get it to stay in place. I had a similar style from Better Homes and Gardens that also relied on rotation to streamline the format and it was fine. Bring it back and take the one with the spring tension mechanism.
