For personal reasons I prefer to use a backpack rather than a handbag. I bought this backpack because it was light blue, not very big and the bow was a nice accent. When I travel by plane, my favorite thing to do is to use a colorful backpack that I can't lose! While I wouldn't use a backpack for anything other than air travel due to my age, I think it's good value for a middle school student. Although it has a plasticky feel compared to the soft leather I prefer, the zippers are well sewn on and slide easily. The back straps are thin, but the backpack is small, and unless you are carrying rocks on the straps, the straps should not dig into your shoulders too much. This bag easily fits a large wallet, iPad, large cell phone, pen, keys and chewing gum. It's small enough to fit under an airplane seat, leaving room for your legs! While I usually hate the feel of plastic on my backpacks, I think it would be great for travel because I can grab a wet wipe and not be afraid to mess it up. I find a good bag for the price. This bag is not designed to carry school books, folders, notebooks, etc.
