Please note that this 2008 reissue is identical in all respects to the 1989 version of the same name. So if you're looking for other reviews, everything you see about the white cover of World of the Microscope applies here. About 18 months ago I finally got my hands on a couple of scopes (composite and stereo) along with almost all the supplies I thought I might need (was confused by dyes that might be useful so just picked methylene blue as it was so easy to get). Unfortunately, without a teacher to prepare me for me, I didn't quite know how to make my own slides. The internet helped a bit, but my first attempts didn't work very well, and I put my microscopes aside with some regret and a vague hope that something would work later. checks it. Almost immediately, I decided that this might fill some of the gaps in my knowledge (e.g. how to properly use the handheld microtome I bought!). Parts of the book don't interest me (e.g. who uses microscopes or how they work, types of scopes and their parts, etc.) but entry-level information on staining, sectioning, preparing various projects for viewing, growing bacteria, etc. Looks like it's just what I need. And yes, there was definitely some good information on using a microtome (including how I could save money by making my own from scratch). Of course, everything has to be scattered around the internet, but I'm a book person and happy to have everything in one place and at my fingertips (which is why I bought my own copy after it looked good at the library). In conclusion, there is always a risk in writing a review before fully utilizing the subject in question, but from the perspective of a potential microscopist looking for a starting point, I expect to be very pleased with this book, and I think other people in my position might like it too. . Oh, and yes, it's definitely made for the children's market, not adults, but for my needs that's not a problem (and maybe even a plus since they don't assume knowledge the reader might not have).
