Check for correct function before installation and use!

I bought this "vented" gas cap almost a year ago and installed it on my son's (new to us) 1971 Ford F250. The truck sat idle most of the year as we worked with the previous owner for 3 years on engine upgrades and breakdown damage repairs. I would never have considered checking the correct operation of the gas cap, but the correct conditions for failure were met when the tank was about half full and the temperature dropped last month. We found that the gas tank in the cockpit had exploded because that gas cap would not let air into the tank. I disassembled the cap and found that the check valve is fine (keeps smoke/pressure in the tank but allows air into the tank when I vacuum on the valve) but that valve was incorrectly set to 180 degrees which led to a light led vent hole. in the lid to block the valve that would not let air into the tank. The design of the cap allows it to be factory assembled in this way. By simply removing two screws I was able to flip it over and it works as intended and we had no further issues. I contacted MotoRad support regarding this and they responded but said there was nothing they could do as I disassembled the header - fair enough - but despite apologizing for the issue they didn't offer any help. So that $11 part cost us a tank ($250) and a roadside breakdown. So I STRONGLY recommend that you test your cap when you receive it. If you don't have the proper testing equipment, simply place your lips on the inside of the cap and blow - this should block the passage of air. Then inhale, and the air should flow freely. If it doesn't, send it back and try another one. The lock works great and the cap is easy to install, but quality control can be an issue.

Pros
  • Protects fuel from theft and vandalism
Cons
  • Will be added later
