Review on KitchenAid KCO124: Cutting-Edge Digital Countertop Oven with Air Fry by Linda Smith

Mostly good, some bad.

This is an attractive tabletop unit, although not particularly small given the depth-to-width ratio. It heats up quickly, the internal thermostat is off by about 10%, which I think is pretty common for a toaster type as they turn on and off quite often during use because they have very poor insulation. The lack of insulation is also why the outside gets very warm - at 450F the sides heat up to 180F and the top 113F. The rear stays pretty cool and I didn't bother to check the bottom. It has many settings where the machine will detect the temperature and time for you, and I've found you have to adjust most of them with a small knob. to get it right for your specific use. The fry function works fairly well but is a bit problematic. A non-rotating basket is just a basket with holes. During hot air frying, fat contained in the product drips onto the sticks or the bottom of the cooking zone and smokes. This smoke is coming from behind or out of the car and I thought the car itself was on fire. It was in the preparation of breaded fish fillets, which are low in fat. If you were to make something like chicken wings I suspect it would be ugly and something greasy like this should probably only be baked on a firm baking sheet to avoid dripping. My wife bought this to replace a year old Black & Decker convection oven. Toaster, and honestly it did about the same thing for half the price, but she thinks the dedicated air fry setting is worth it, and I'm not going to argue with her about that. We tried the specialty fryer and weren't thrilled and returned it because the foods stacked in the middle of the stack didn't get as crispy as the outer pieces, while these stack them evenly and hot air circulates from all sides.
