I'm downgrading from 12 to 14 volts to 5 volts. The readings make it unnecessary to use a multimeter, which is good because I didn't want to spend a lot on my little car project. As far as I know, these little guys walk cool. And from what I've read about this type of regulator (buck converter) they are as efficient as can be. That means no excessive power consumption.
