My cat Bernie loves to scratch. But only that it should not scratch. Carpet, sofas, drywall—if it costs me money, he'll break it. I've tried everything. Spray bottle, foil, anti-scratch spray and loud noises. Nothing could stop him. And then there was this beautiful thing. I didn't even have time to assemble it (which was very easy btw!) as I had to duck for cover as Bernie ATTACKS that scratching post. He's obsessed! Furniture saved! The only downside I would say is that the base isn't very heavy so it can easily tip over. Bernie weighs 13 pounds but I think that would be fine for a small cat. I'll just put mine against the wall in the future. I highly recommend!
