Contrary to the description here and on the StarTech website, this item does not support hot-swap (associated with a specific bay ). In particular, the docking station restarts when a disc is inserted or ejected. Each time the dock restarts, all devices in the dock disappear from the operating system and then reappear. If any operation is performed on drive A while drive B is being inserted or removed, the operation will be aborted and file system corruption may result. If the file system is mounted on drive A when drive B is inserted/removed, it may be marked dirty and run fsck, CHKDSK or something similar at a later time even if drive A was idle.
