Still, you definitely need strength to push the blades through. An elderly relative cannot do this. That last piece of apple is surprisingly difficult to cut, and I find myself smashing the base with the knife to push it through, the apple stuck firmly in it. This broke off a small piece of the base, although it is still functional. If you plan on slicing a lot of apples I would suggest getting one of those expensive models that use a stronger base material. Personally, I don't see the point of spending that much for something I use once every few weeks.
