Review on Sony DVDirect DVD Recorder VRDMC5 by Dana Mahendra

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Easy to use if you're not doing anything special.

Connect your camcorder with a DV cable, insert your DVD-R and press the big red button. You can watch him play (no sound) and he ejects the disc when he's done. What could be easier? Spring. the whole thing only works if you record 1 hour tape. If the tape goes to more than one disc, you'll have trouble until you figure out how to manually record and "finalize" the second disc. If you're not using a DV cable, you'll also need to capture and finalize manually. TIP: To "finalize" a disc, you can simply eject it and then reply to two confirmation messages. Also, if you press the "Menu" button, you can no longer press the "big handy red record button" (without going into the menu). Yes, you can set the "Recording Quality" (which controls how many minutes of video can be burned to disc) to ensure the entire tape can be transferred to a DVD. Finally, I CANNOT make a copy of the DVD! I've tried software (NERO, Windows XP and Windows Vista) but nothing good. Just copy the menu and you're done. For example: All real video files are simply not copied. I've been watching DVDs created with my other authoring software and this unit doesn't seem to be creating some (perhaps necessary?) files. However, it plays fine on my DVD player and PC. Suggestions are welcome. Because of all these oddities and the poor menu interface, I only gave it 3 stars. He just takes it well. 3) Handle multiple discs automatically (allowing me to hit the burn button again with a second disc to continue and finish) 4) Create a "normal" DVD that can be copied

Pros
  • Play/view on built-in 2.5" LCD, discs created only
Cons
  • For old
