Review on 24 Vivid Watercolor Paints Set With Brush - Perfect For Students, Beginners & Hobbyists (HIMI Green) by Lakeisha Smith

Nice quality, great value!

I have used primarily Windsor Newton since I began painting. I have picked up some pigments when we travel. Somehow we always wind up in an art store. When I moved to Hawaii I was not able to find any decent quality paint here. Ebay has given me access to many things I would not otherwise be able to purchase (here). This year I have tried a number of lesser known brands, and have been largely unimpressed, as most if not all of them are dye based, not pigment. The Miya/ Himi are different. They actually behave like pigment! The colors are very saturated and the set contains a nice range of basic colors. That it contains a white is pretty unique. The white is fairly opaque (you can see a small stripe I painted over mostly dry black. It also blends well and can be used to opacify other colors or to make pastels, albeit less transparent. They are very nice quality paints and fun to work with. They do not dry down (in the pan) as much as most other watercolors, are more similar to Sennalier than other paints I have used. Even that comparison elevates them above any of the other sets from less familar brands which I have tried. This is a good set for beginners (start with real pigments!) and also a good adjunct for serious artists. I expand my palette whenever I can, if the paint is good quality. Even duplicating shades adds nuance since they always vary a bit.If you are looking for a good quality set of paints which you do not have to fret over using, this is it.
