Not sure if others get very different products or just not paying attention to the pictures. There is an air hole, which is 2 or 3 slits on the back of the container. You can only see it when it's open, and when it's closed, the loop "closes" it. Even with the hinge, it still has a small amount of airflow. I will say that I have been using this type of retainer for many years. If you don't wash it from time to time and don't let it air dry wet / close the case with the wet mount inside. it will mold after a while no matter what case you use. So please clean your retainer cases (and retainers) regularly so you don't get anything dirty near your mouth.
