Very good quality and lasts a long time but the cable is very thick and hard

I have two of these on different tables. They are of very good quality and easy to assemble. The look and feel is more on the "industrial" side than the "fashionable" side. The only downside is the cable - it's ridiculously thick and stiff and can be tricky to get routing where you want it. The cord is more durable than most power tools. Why?
