Review on NTONPOWER Protector Extension Mountable Essentials by Jeff Wyble

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Really good network filter; Could be a bit stronger

It's not easy to find a surge protector with a 15" cable and enough outlets/charging ports, so I bought it when I saw it. Cord length and outlet placement are excellent. So why only 4 instead of 5 stars? Some things are perfect and there are a few minor/annoying issues that prevent it from being best in class: PROS: - 15 inch cable with a 45 degree plug (angled to the right) so you can plug it into the top or bottom socket without covering another socket - 8 3-pin sockets (3 of which are very far apart for those pesky charging blocks) and 2 USB-A charging ports - Indicators show "Protected" and "Grounded" (many other brands just show "Protected".") - Velcro included to tuck away excess cord (15ft longer than you think, but too long is better than too short.) - Handy template and two screws for Mounting the surge protector to the wall CONS: - The whole block is a bit light and plasticky to the touch. It doesn't feel cheap, but it lacks the premium texture and weight you'd expect at this price point. (Maybe are the chargers lighter ge been, which is good. I'm relying on the engineers to see if a little more is better.) - The on/off button feels a bit flimsy. In the "on" position. The switch is a little loose, so a light press is enough to turn it off accidentally. This shouldn't be a problem if the device is out of your reach behind your hardware, but if it's directly on your desktop, be aware. - Power button does not light up and the device is not clearly labeled "On" and "Off". There is a raised plastic line on the "On" side, but if you don't look closely (and remember, that the plastic line means 'on'), you won't know if it's on or not - The 'Protected' and 'Ground' lights are so tiny and dim (see photo) that you really have to look at them directly to see if they light up.- All the sockets and connectors are quite tight. They can loosen up a bit over time, but it took a lot of effort to get the three prong plugs fitted properly; the unplugging of the 3 pin connector is not a problem at all The USB A connectors were the opposite: the connector fit easily into both connectors but I figured I'd have to call a computer tech to get them out without them and/or the surge protector damage. (I ended up removing them , but both USB ports got caught on these connectors and wouldn't let go.) - There are four thin little rubber washers on the bottom which I assume are meant to protect your mahogany desk. For fractions of a cent, they could use thicker, stronger rubber rims that not only offer better protection, but also provide better traction on horizontal surfaces. For me, the pros far outweigh the cons. Unless you're constantly plugging and unplugging devices or turning the device on and off, this device has a large number of outlets and a great layout. As long as it doesn't fry and melt my gear, it's definitely a keeper. (The description says the device is "backed by $300,000 Connected Equipment Liability Insurance," but that's one of the guarantees, I hope I never have to test it. Pros
  • Widely spaced AC outlets: Wide spacing between 3 outlets allows you to plug in large power adapters without blocking other outlets. Whether it's a desk power strip or a nightstand power adapter, it's easy to plug in your computer, desk lamp, air purifier, college or dorm supplies.
Cons
  • Protection
